Cloud Backup
What Is the 3-2-1-1-0 Backup Rule?
The 3-2-1-1-0 rule explained: three copies, two media, one offsite, one immutable or offline, zero errors after verification, with practical examples.
Backnix stores backups in S3-compatible object storage. We work with more than one storage provider and region, so you can keep data where your business and your customers need it.
Keeping backups with the same provider and region as production is convenient, but it ties your recovery to the availability of that single provider. Data residency rules may also require data to stay in specific countries.
An outage, billing problem or account lock affects production and backups together.
A regional outage can make both copies unavailable.
Some customers require data to remain in a given country or economic area.
When the only copy of your backups is in the same place as your servers, an incident at that place leaves you waiting with no alternative. Contracts that require data to stay in a region can also be breached unknowingly.
Backnix manages capacity across several S3-compatible providers and regions. Your organization receives allocated capacity in one or more storage destinations, each with a defined region. Multi-region storage keeps an additional copy in a different region when you contract it.
Separate storage locations for different servers or data sets.
A second copy of the same backups in another region, shown as redundant only after replication is active.
Every billed copy is counted, so a replicated terabyte is two terabytes of storage.
The diagram shows the designed architecture; availability is listed below.
Pick from the regions available for your plan.
Backnix is not tied to a single storage vendor.
Data is encrypted before it reaches storage.
Object storage is designed for durability: providers store objects redundantly within a region. Durability is not the same as availability, and neither protects against deleting data yourself. Features such as versioning and S3 Object Lock can protect against deletion and ransomware, and they depend on the provider and bucket configuration. Not every provider offers every region, so the regions available for your plan are listed when you contract.
